The beginning of the Simple Pound Network?

June 4, 2007

A month before my graduation, University decided to prove to me that studying is in fact hard work. Out of the last 48 hours I spent roughly 32 hours in front of my computer, frantically writing the project report that is going to accompany my dissertation project. For several reasons, this very report got a bit behind schedule and the only thing that could be done to rectify this situation was constant work. But I shall stop whining.

Now let me explain the title. Those of you, who have followed the comments on my end of the month review, will know that a close friend of mine is currently saving for a deposit to buy a property and seemed quite intrigued by how I’m tracking my net worth. I light-heartedly offered him some “space” for a similar progress bar and he took me up on this offer! :-)

And what’s that got to do with a network? The author of the “No Credit Needed” blog established a community in which members could share their personal finance goals and track their progress using charts (more information here). Most of these goals evolve around getting out of debt, but aren’t necessarily limited to this. So when my friend agreed to have his progress tracked here, I started daydreaming about what could become of this…

But let’s get back down to Earth. Since he’s commented as “Ad”, that’s what the new progress bar will be called. In fact, if you look over to the right, you will probably see it right there. Currently, he’s still in the red, so accordingly the progress bar will have a red bar, but we’ll try to turn it green as soon as possible. The overall goal is a 20% down payment, and I will represent his progress as a percentage, just as I do with my own personal finance goals on Simple Pound.

I don’t believe in putting down absolute values, as they bear no importance beyond people’s individual circumstances. Instead I choose to plot the percentages because the hard work lies in the journey, not in the ultimate goal and it can be just as hard to save £1,000 as it can be to save £100,000.

If anyone else is interested in having their progress tracked, I will be more than happy to add a graph. This might turn into a separate page if demand is high enough, but I might just be day-dreaming again…

Some concluding remarks, primarily directed at Ad (and they are intended to sound just a tiny bit condescending): I’m very proud of you for finally getting to grips with your finances and for stopping to WASTE MONEY UNCONTROLLABLY.

Hi Kirsten,

I like the sound of giving people the ability to see how they’re getting on getting out of debt, in a simple way, and it would be good for people in similar situations to help each other out. If you need any help developing this idea, let me know.

Rob
