I think having a budget or at least a vague idea of your spending habits helps immensely. You will know exactly what sort of amount you could comfortably live on while someone else (like a mortgage advisor) certainly doesn't. I'd always go to an advisor with a certain figure in mind already so that you can feel rest-assured should they confirm your own findings, but at the same time you're in a position to say "That won't work".
